Materials, Membranes & Miles

Every pair of Vasque boots is built to a philosophy older than most footwear brands: choose the finest raw materials, then design the boot around how a foot actually behaves on rough ground. Full-grain waterproof leathers, GORE-TEX linings, Vibram outsoles, and stitched constructions that reward the miles you put into them.

We test our boots the only way that matters — on the trail. Long days on granite. Wet weeks on the PCT. Frozen mornings in the Boundary Waters. The features you feel in a Vasque boot are the features that survived them.

Six Decades on the Trail

A Quiet History of Firsts

Vasque was born from a simple frustration: American hikers deserved boots as thoughtful as the best European mountaineering brands. Here is the shape of the road that followed.

1964

The Vasque Story Begins

Vasque is founded to bring European hiking-boot craftsmanship to the American outdoor market — a small line of leather boots for a growing generation of backpackers.

1984

The Sundowner Arrives

The Vasque Sundowner debuts and quickly becomes the defining American backpacking boot — full-grain leather, Norwegian welt, built for the long haul.

1995

GORE-TEX & The Skywalk

Vasque expands its GORE-TEX line, with the Skywalk emerging as a benchmark for waterproof mid-height hikers on trails from the Appalachians to the Alps.

2009

The Breeze Reinvents Day-Hiking

The Vasque Breeze launches and redefines what a lightweight waterproof day-hiker can feel like — the model has been continuously refined ever since.

Today

Trail-Tested. Still.

From the St. Elias GTX to the Coldspark UltraDry winter line, the current Vasque collection carries forward the same commitment: build the boot the trail actually needs.

Recognised by the outdoor press that walks the walk.

“A boot that has quietly outlasted trends for decades — the Sundowner remains one of the great American backpacking boots ever built.”

— Backpacker Magazine

“Vasque continues to prove that the difference between a good hiking boot and a great one is measured in years, not features.”

— Outside

“If your feet still hurt at mile fifteen, you’re wearing the wrong boot. The Breeze is the right boot.”

— Gear Junkie
From the Trail

Worn by Hikers Who Notice

My Vasque Sundowners are on their third resole and their second continent. I’ve owned exactly one pair of hiking boots for twelve years — and I’ve never once thought about a second pair.

Daniel R.Thru-Hiker · Pacific Crest Trail

I bought the Women’s Breeze for a weekend and ended up wearing them through a wet, muddy month in Patagonia. Dry feet, no blisters, and they still look almost new. That’s a Vasque.

About Vasque Boots

Are Vasque hiking boots true to size?

Vasque hiking boots generally run true to size, but because our boots are built on men’s- and women’s-specific lasts, we recommend ordering your regular walking-shoe size and wearing them with the same weight of sock you plan to hike in. Models like the Breeze and St. Elias have distinct fit personalities — the Breeze runs a touch roomier in the toe box, while the St. Elias GTX offers a more precise backpacking fit.

What is the difference between Vasque GORE-TEX and UltraDry waterproofing?

GORE-TEX is a proven waterproof-breathable membrane licensed from W. L. Gore, used in our Skywalk, St. Elias, and other GTX models. UltraDry is Vasque’s own waterproof-breathable system, tuned specifically for the temperature range of our winter and mid-weight hiking lines like the Coldspark and Talus AT UltraDry. Both keep water out; the choice comes down to the boot’s intended use.

How do I break in a new pair of Vasque boots?

For lighter models like the Breeze, a few short walks are usually enough. For heavier leather boots such as the Sundowner or St. Elias GTX, we recommend a gradual break-in — a few days of casual wear followed by short hikes with a light pack, before committing to a long backpacking trip. Full-grain leather softens and moulds to your foot over time, which is exactly what makes these boots last so long.

Can Vasque boots be resoled?

Yes — many of our heritage models, including the Sundowner and St. Elias GTX, are built with constructions designed to be resoled by a qualified cobbler. This is one of the defining features of a serious Vasque boot: with care, a single pair can carry you across decades of trails.

Which Vasque hiking boot should I choose for my first backpacking trip?

For most first-time backpackers carrying a moderate pack, the Vasque Breeze or Vasque Talus is an excellent starting point — supportive, waterproof, and comfortable straight out of the box. If you plan to carry heavier expedition loads or hike in more technical terrain, step up to the St. Elias GTX or Sundowner. Our men’s and women’s hiking collections show the full range at a glance.
